A little rant...

I need to rant about this... I've been ticked off about this since about 9 this morning and I thought I could get over it... but I need to rant. Sorry if you don't care.


So today was the premiere of Eyeshield 21 on Toonami Jetstream, VIZ Media and Cartoon Network's streaming service, and I was super excited. I was a little worried about how some things would be handled since there a lot of guns in Eyeshield 21, but overall I was super excited.

This morning came and I checked to see if it was up... it was! I was so happy. I watched through the football sequence in the opening of the episode and I was happy with the way Hiruma sounded (something I was never happy with in the Japanese version. He just sounded so... off.) I laughed a bit at the cheesy opening sequence, but I was still doing okay. I noticed that after the credits the episode started a bit into the story. I thought I was remembering things wrong and the original episode started that way... it was possible, it's been well over a year since I first saw any of the anime. I was pleased with the voices... Sena sounded kinda whimpy, Mamori sounded a bit pushy, the Huh Huh Brothers sounded great... but I noticed that it seemed kinda jumpy. The pacing felt really weird.

As things went along I noticed that things were being skipped over... and not just little scenes or things that might be considered too much for the age group... but big things like any scene that involved character development. Sena's big "stand up the bullies in order to keep Kurita out of trouble" moment was completely gone. The episode went straight from Sena meeting the Brothers on the bridge to Sena being chased by them. The scene were Hiruma and co. run the 40-meter dash was also cut up. Sena ran with his super speed from the start. There was no wild dog animal chasing him. When it came time for Hiruma and co. to "recruit" people for the team the entire scene where Sena meets Ishimaru was cut out. In the dub episode Sena just randomly saw Ishimaru delivering papers and recruited him without even asking if he went to school with him.

Scenes from at least the first three episodes of the original series went into the first dub episode. It seemed that anything that wasn't about football, people talking about football, or extremely needed for the plot was cut out.

I'm extremely disappointed. I was so looking forward to this. Eyeshield 21 is one of those series that holds a little place in my heart. I knew that were would be issues would things because of the gun use and the underage characters that smoke and other random things. But this is just... horrible. Horrible! I'm just shocked that this is still happening with anime.

I'm just... sad... and pissed. I liked the voice acting, but the edits are horrible. This is like 4Kids stuff.

Hello. I know what you are saying about the dub. I read the manga of Eyeshield 21 and I have seen the first and second episodes in japanese. And then I watched the first dubbed episode and everything was different.
