Something I forgot to mention in yesterday's post...

There are six of us in class working on medical coding at the moment. We're all about ready to pull our hair out trying to learn how to do it as our instruction book tells us and get through the test over it. Our teacher arranged for us to tour one of the local clinics to let us see how they really do it.

We learned that while we're working our asses off trying to learn it... the ones they have actually working in the departments have had no training in it whatsoever. They've just been put there and learned it hands on.

Needless to say, we were no pleased by that fact. But I feel that if they can do it without knowing anything about it beforehand, then I can certainly do it after going through this stupid book. Which is good since I was leaning toward coding after talking with my teacher at the beginning of the school year. (I like that I'd be working pretty much by myself.) But after starting the work on it, I was frustrated that I was struggling with the book. But now I feel ten times better about it.

So for those who haven't heard (which would be most people)... I HAVE A JOB.

FUCK YEAH.

Technically it's work/study so I didn't exactly interview or anything and it's for the school and their desperate for people to help out the teachers so it's not like they had high standards... but still. I have a job.

My official title (according to my id card) is "secretary" but what I'm really doing is teacher help. I'm grading papers, filing papers, making copies, etc. I work part time in the mornings and I get 7.50 an hour. Monday, Wednesday, Friday I work for my teacher and on Tuesday and Thursday I work for the nursing class across the hall.

I was sort of nervous about working for the nursing class because I didn't really know the teachers. But yesterday after I finished making some copies my teacher was in the hall walking back to class and Mrs. Pierce (one of the nursing teachers) told my teacher that I was awesome. I even got loaned out to the health careers class to grade papers. (This morning the health careers teacher was in our class and told my teacher I was good. My teacher was just all "I know.")

I also finished up my training in medical office procedures and now I've started learning medical coding. The books are quite frustrating and I'm just not totally grasping the terminology, but I can handle the looking up the codes and I already know the basic breakdown of the CPT coding system. There are six of us working on coding and our teacher is trying to arrange a field trip to the Choctaw clinic here so we can see how actual coders do their work. After I finish this up I to medical transcription (which is only frustrating when dealing with the terminology.)

I also hit 113 wpm the other day. My usual speed is around the high 80s/low 90s still, but I'm getting there.

edit: Also can I just say that I feel like my confidence level has gone up at least 200 points in the last month. I actually feel good about things. It's all very odd.

So I signed up to do work-study at school. Basically it means I drop back to half-time in class and spend the other three hours working at the school. I'll mainly be doing teacher help, but there are times when I might be put in the office to help out. I won't start till sometime after the board meeting on the 8th though.

Class is going good. I've finished two chapters and did a two day medical office simulation and I'm currently in the middle of my first bit of transcription. Both morning and afternoon classes have filled up, but so far everyone seems really eager to do stuff. I've already had one new girl say she's interested in competing at state.

We also had elections for our BPA chapter. Since our class is technically two classes (morning and afternoon) we do two sets of officers. I was elected President for the afternoon class (since I'll be working in the mornings.) I'm really excited about it. I've never held an office in anything before so it's slightly nerve-wracking. Thankfully our teacher is awesome and I'm also good friends with the morning president (in fact we sit right next to each other.)

I gave blood on Thursday. This was the first time I've done it since high school. I got a t-shirt and tickets to the OKC zoo which I gave to a lady in class who has little ones at home.

In other news... Saw the season finale of Being Human last night. I really like how the series turned out overall. I think it's my new favorite vampire/fantasy TV series. George is easily my new favorite werewolf.

Still counting down the days till The Resistance comes out and I'm still on Muse overload. I do enjoy the Matt wallpaper on my computer at school though. It's very spiffy. Speaking of spiffy things... even if you don't like Muse you have to admit the shuffle dance is quite spiffy. Just look at that timing.

Oh and I finally broke 100 wpm typing speed~.

So school started on Wednesday. I'm a full time student this year (I was only part time last year.) We finally hammered out exactly what I need to do this year and when it needs to be done so that there are no snafus with financial aid.

Basically I'm finishing out what I'm currently training for (Medical Office Assistant) and I have to be finished with the last two sections before the beginning of December. Then I'll just straight into Administrative Medical Office and pick up medical transcription and coding to finish out the year.

A lot of last year's people came back this year so I already know most of the people in class. We're planning on putting our Administrative Support Team back together and trying state competition again (we all really want to go to Nationals in Anaheim), but one person didn't come back so we'll have to find someone to fill in or try it as a three person team.

In other news... I didn't manage to get caught up on True Blood, but I'll get there eventually. It's not like I get HBO anyway so I can't catch up and then watch it on TV.

I saw 17 Again last night. I was expecting to not really care for it (it's all been done before in various ways), but I was really surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it. Thomas Lennon was just amazing (and fuck you Comedy Central for canceling Reno 911!). I was also surprised by how much I actually liked Zac Efron. He was actually pretty good and quite charming. (And I will admit it... quite attractive.)

Today has not been a good day.

It started out well. I woke up and TCM was doing a Cary Grant marathon. I watched My Favorite Wife and The Awful Truth. Then my aunt decided to mow and asked me to let one of the dogs out. Our other dog takes off in the woods when you let her out of the yard, so I was holding her while I opened the fence (like I always freaking do) and she slammed into the fence which shoved it back over my big toe and ripped the nail up.

It is bad. (Feels bad anyway.) It finally stopped hurting a while ago and now I've just got to not hit it on anything (which is like trying to tell water to stop being wet.)

School is back on Wednesday. I'm looking forward to it. I really hope to be caught up on True Blood by then. I only have a handful of episodes left.

Bah... this entry feels short.

I got a call from my teacher today telling me that I made in this year and that classes start on the 12th. I actually get to go full time this year which means I'll actually have time to work on stuff. I'm looking forward to telling everyone how Nationals went and start the poking early to get people wanting to go next year.

I watched The Soloist and Sense and Sensibility last night. The Soloist wasn't bad. I admit that I was mostly on board for Robert Downey, Jr. and he did not disappoint. Sense and Sensibility was very good. I watched the 1995 version with Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman. I'm not huge on Alan Rickman usually, but UNF I say... UNF. Loved Hugh Laurie as Mr. Palmer.

On the True Blood front I'm up through episode five of season two. Jason has officially become my favorite character. I was won over when he turned and looked out the window after what's-his-face said "there's a war going on out there." And "Evil is the premedicated choice to be a dick." might just be the best line ever. I'm planning on being caught up soon and then it's onto 30 Rock.

Also Muse's new single is awesome. I cannot wait for September.

So someone posted to [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek about seeing the film with their dad and both of them tearing up and it really got me thinking and bummed me out a bit.

I am incredibly sad that I cannot see this movie with my mom. And that I can't see anything with her anymore. I can't geek out with her anymore.

I also realized that she had a hand in an insane amount of my fandoms.

She introduced me to pretty much every science fiction/fantasy series/movie I've ever loved. Let's just look at the ones I can remember: Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess... I know there's more. I just can't think of them!

I started rewatching season three of Heroes and while it's better than season two, I'm not enjoying it nearly as much and I've finally figured out the reason. I'm not watching it with her. We watched Heroes together and came up with our theories and tried to figure everything out and snark on Claire and Peter and perv a little over Nathan. Heck that was all the fun of Lost too. Trying to figure out everything together.

Thinking of that reminds me of a summer where we had a shitload of fun with a mystery. There was a soap opera on NBC awhile back called Passions and one summer they had a big overarching mystery plot. I remember both of us trying to figure out who did it. We even had a freaking chart hanging on the wall to mark out suspects. I don't remember who did it, but I remember us debating on suspects.

I've noticed that series like CSI has lost it's spark with me as well... I think part of that is that I've lost the fun it used to have fingering who did it and making fun of all the suspects.

I think she also played a large part in my love of slash (and even if she didn't I'm gonna blame her.) We always had the computer in the living room. I remember her watching Queer as Folk on TV as it was premiering and being really weirded out. I mean what the hell this is my mom watching what is kinda gay porn on TV in the same room with me. That lasted for about a season and then I just gave up and started watching it with her. (She also totally got me into Torchwood by being all "Oh yeah Jack is a little bisexual." I remember her actually cheering when Jack and Ianto kissed for the first time. Geez fangirl much, mom?)

This all also makes me wonder if the reason I latched onto House so hard is because it was something that we didn't share. We never watched House together. Never even thought about watching it. I didn't see my first episode till after I was living with my aunt. I also wonder if it's coincidence that the very first episode of House I ever saw was "Who's Your Daddy?" which had a PotW with her name, Leona.

TL;DR Version: I really miss watching things with my mom. Geeking out over TV and movies with her were really some of my best times.

My aunt is going back to school! Her first class is a history class and it starts on Tuesday night. She's kinda nervous, but I think she'll do okay. We also got lucky and my old history book is still used so we saved some money since that book is way overpriced even used.

I also finally got my old CDs out of storage... on the same day my computer died. So my iPod will have to wait a while before I rock the Ace of Base and Backstreet Boys on it.

Speaking of computers... we talked last night and we decided to spring for a really nice computer for entertainment purposes (me for my anime and TV show watching and my uncle for his gaming) and use my aunt's computer (the one I'm on now) for everything else. If everything goes right I should be able to get it before October too.

Dallas in a little over a week... I'm kind of dreading it since I'll be with a group of people I don't know and I currently don't have a ton of spending money (food is being paid for thankfully.) I really hope we get a good amount of time to veg out at the hotel since I really want to soak up that overpriced Sheraton goodness.

Entertainment-wise... for some insane reason I've decided to catch up on Heroes. I know, I know... it's crazy. But I'm bored and instead of watching something I need to watch *cough*Mad Men, 30 Rock*cough* I'd rather watch something that makes me sad. It's what I do.

Also I have got to get a DS so I can play Scribblenauts when it comes out. That game looks insanely amazing. You can summon Keyboard Cat! KEYBOARD CAT!

I totally forgot about watching this last night, but thankfully Hulu saves my ass (yet again).

It's kind of crazy how much I loved this pilot. I had a giant smile on my face the entire time and honestly... I kinda teared up at the end. *loser* It's slightly bizarre though what with the dark humor mixed in with the "HAPPY YAY" stuff. Needless to say I will be watching in the fall.

In other news... two more days of school left this year! Whoo! I "helped" put up the calendar for next month. It looks so... thrown together by five year olds, but I don't care. I managed to put it up without injuring myself.

Speaking of... in addition to Monday's injuries I sliced my thumb with my own fingernail while trying to open a box of tea and then burned the exact same spot trying to drain the water off some pasta. And tonight I burned my arm on the cookie sheet trying to shake some fries off it. So not my week.

Oh... 30 Rock Progress: Season 1, Episode 4

Trip recap!

Surprisingly only about 10 of us went when about 20 of us had said we were going. (Though honestly I'm glad some of them didn't go. >_>) We left out about 8:30 and got there at about 10. We did a quick tour of Paris Junior College and then went and did some shopping. I was broke so I just browsed around Hastings for like an hour and a half. I almost broke and bought a Sookie Stackhouse book, but alas I held out. At noon we went for lunch... it was nothing to write home about. Their cheesecake was good though. Then we hit a couple more stores and came home.

I'm kind of disappointed that the movie theater down there wouldn't work with us, but I had fun anyway. I managed to hit my head twice on the padded bar thing above the door of the bus (once getting on and once getting off) and I hit my shin on the bar under my seat three times. I've got a nice bruise forming.

Four more days and then I'm out for summer... really kinda looking forward to it.

Also My Life is Average is amazing.

OMG EDIT: HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] spookyboxers

So it's been a while since I did a proper update so I'm gonna try and hit the high points...

School: Finally started using MediSoft in Medical Office Procedures. It's not as bad as I was expecting, but I still haven't hit the simulations yet so that could change. Competency testing for us is this coming Wednesday. Class trip to the OKC Omniplex/science museum is on April 28th. I also finally enrolled for next year and hopefully I'll get to be a full time student this time.

Movies: Finally saw Twilight... Peter Facinelli as a blonde is just so wrong. I find it kind of funny that I saw two movies in less than a week where the best part involved a Muse song. Also I will not lie... I saw The Day the Earth Stood Still for Jon Hamm and Jon Hamm only. I honestly couldn't tell you much that happened when he was on screen. The scruff was super hot.

Books: I bought the next three Sookie Stackhouse books (Living Dead in Dallas, Club Dead, and Dead to the World). I'm almost finished with the second Night Angel book. So good. I love a series where I can actually end up liking characters I once despised. Vi has gone from "snoozefest" to "how wonderfully bitchy". Also I must stop myself from shipping Kylar and Vi since I know he won't end up with her. I also bought Confessions of a Shopaholic couple of weeks ago.

Television: Stupid Kal Penn liking stupid politics. This season of House has been so... all over the place. There's only a handful of episodes left and while I'm really not looking forward to yet another "omg Cameron is like totally in love with House!" thing or a "House could have been super happy with [insert female character here], but he pushed her away because he's a miserable wreck" thing we all know he can only be happy with Wilson, I am interested in seeing what they do for the finale. (Hopefully there will be Wilson goodness.)

I also gutted and restuffed my section of our Netflix with all the TV I've been putting off watching. I'm working through Jeeves and Wooster right now (I finished season one. I'm once again totally smitten with both Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.) and then it's on to Mad Men and Supernatural.

Video Games Persona: I'm in October with Persona 3. It is such fucking bullshit that you only get the best character for a month. I'll miss his badassness and the completely awesome way he used his Evoker. I still don't know how I'm going to manage The Answer side of P3 since it's equivalent to the hard version of The Journey. I expected epic fail from me though.

Manga: I'm still not caught up on Fullmetal Alchemist or One Piece. I am caught up on Reborn! though and I must say I'm glad the girls are getting their say. Though Haru is still a million times better than Kyoko. I'm also current with xxxHOLiC (I only care again because Doumeki and Watanuki are staying with each other now) and Tsubasa (What the fuck has happened to this series? Just tell me if Kurogane and Fai go off to be gay ever after so I can stop caring about this headache inducing clusterfuck.)

Yeah so this is my giant megapost about my trip to Tulsa and the BPA State Leadership Conference… be prepared for longness.

I told you to be prepared... )

Also leaving my cat for two and a half days has turned him into a needy love thing that’s driving us all crazy. Can’t wait to see what’s gonna happen when I’m gone for nearly a week.

Also also... I finally did catch this week's House. Wilson ♥

I think I'll change the top banner on the journal tomorrow. I'm in the mood for something red...

Dammmmmmmmmmiiiiiitttttt...

I'm sick. My throat is sore and my nose is getting runnier by the second. Though it's only in one freaking side which is always annoying as fuck.

I can't even stay home tomorrow cause we're doing simulations for competition and I have to be there. Maybe I'll cut Tuesday if I'm still feeling run down.

P.S. Ladyhawke = Super Awesome

I placed in the top 20 in the pre-testing round for my other state competition event! That means I get to compete in it.

Whoo!
queendork56: (Default)
So we did our first team run for state contest on Friday. It was frantic and we got no points, but I think it went well. We know that we can get in there and get stuff done and done right without too many problems in the amount of time we have to get done. Our biggest problem was the small details (i.e. arranging thing in the right order.) But now we know what we need to work on this month.

I feel double glad that things went okay on my end (I was the only one to get points for my job!) because I volunteered to handle Microsoft Access stuff which meant learning how to use Access in less than four days. Now I just have to hope they ask me to do something fairly uncomplicated.

[livejournal.com profile] kohikki has me watching Hetalia. Why do I love it so? Why is that the only anime I've touched in months? I really need to get back into the swing of watching stuff. Especially with that new Fullmetal Alchemist series coming down the road.

Also I love this song.
