So I finished season one of True Blood and I decided to make a list of what I felt was good and bad about it.

Good - Bill. He feels a bit... vanilla in the books (keep in mind I'm still in the midst of the 3rd book), but I feel he comes off a lot better in the series. Or maybe I was just won over by the golf.
Bad - Tara and all her drama. I really hope she comes off better next season because I don't know how much more of that I can take.
Good - Good expansion of existing side characters. Specifically Lafayette and Terry Bellfleur.
Middle - Jessica. I was pretty much expecting to hate her guts based on what I knew about how she came about, but I actually kind of like what little we saw of her. I'll have to wait and see what's in store for her next season.
Middle - Jason's expansion. One the one hand I like some of what they did with him, but on the other I really don't like some of what they did with him. He is still mighty pretty though.
Good - Theme song. It's awesome.
Bad - The part in the opening credits with the dead fox creeps me straight the fuck out.
Good - Eric.
Bad - Giving Eric's one real moment to Bill.
Awesome - Pam. Are there people who don't like Pam? If so, what's their damage?

I feel pretty positive about it over all though. Now on to season two...
queendork56: (Default)
Leverage - I marathoned this via Netflix's instant watch thing... TV show shouldn't be this fun. =D Fun characters, people getting what they deserve, Gina Bellman... all TV shows should be this fun. It also helps that every episode involves Christian Kane hitting people which seems to vastly improve my day.

True Blood - I've made it through two episodes so far and while I have some issues I think I'll keep going. The accents are pretty horrible. Anna Paquin still can't act her way out of a paper bag. Bill and Sookie are still a snoozefest. But the guy who is playing Jason is oh-so-pretty and frequently naked. That's more than enough for me. Plus there's Eric who I still haven't gotten to yet. I really don't care for Tara in the series. Maybe I misread the handful of scenes she had in second and third books (or maybe it's something that comes up later in the series), but why is she such a bitch to everyone? Or maybe it's that grating accent that just makes it seem worse. I don't know, but it's old already. I do like what they did with Lafayette though. He was such a non-character in the first book and very not good things happened to him in the second, but I like what they've done with his expansion.

I think my biggest disappointment comes from scanning the cast list on IMDb and seeing that they've seem to cut two of my favorite side characters - Bubba and JB. How they can they cut out the King? And we need JB just so there can be more hot guys running around. =(

Torchwood: Children of Earth - I don't know if I liked this or not. I really don't. On the one hand... the mini-series format works so much better than their usual formula, but on the other hand... lots of NO.

Being Human - What's this? A series about vampires/werewolves where I don't have the overwhelming urge to light someone on fire? (Well okay I kinda wanna light Lauren on fire, but still...) Everyone should be watching this... if only for George.

Watchmen - So what exactly was the point of changing the ending, again? I know part of it had to have been "well that's kind of stupid" but the movie ending was just as stupid. I must say that I did quite enjoy the guy who played Rorschach. I also quite enjoyed Patrick Wilson as Dan. I didn't think he was gonna work, but he did for me. (Zac Synder can take his stupid slo-mo uber-violence and DIAF though.)

Comic-con - Why is this the year that everyone awesome decided to go to Comic-con?! Super excited to hear that the Iron Man 2 footage went over well. I'm also excited to hear that Marvel is gonna chill out on the massive crossover events (which still sounds like "we're trying to fix everything before The Avengers comes out.) Not as excited to hear that Pym/Ant-Man doesn't seem to be part of it though. The Iron Man anime teaser looked awesome while the Wolverine one looked not as awesome. Marvel's new cartoon project has an awesome cast (and involved Hawkeye! Yay Hawkeye!) but I can't help but wish they were doing an animated version of Mini-Marvels instead.

I don't quite know how I feel about Dominic Monaghan joining the cast of Flashforward, but do know that I'm super excited to have John Cho and Jack Davenport on my TV every week.

Also Legion can be the shittiest movie in all of existence for all I care... I saw the poster and I'm completely sold.

Also also... call me crazy, but I kinda like the 11th Doctor's outfit. It's quite spiffy.

Dear TV Guide Network,

Stop. Just stop. For fuck's sake - STOP. It's been two weeks since Michael Jackson died. You have reported on everything that could possibly have happened during that span of time. Stop. Now. Just stop. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for you to still be going for 24/7 coverage of this.

I know... believe me, I know that summer is a shit time for TV and therefore you don't really have a lot to cover... but there's movies! And summer is a great time for "25 Hottest _______" lists! You could do that! Everyone loves list shows!

But please... for the love of all things good and nice in this world... let it go. It's fine to do an update on the hour or devote most of your news type programs to it... but do we really need you to spend hours dissecting the life, career, and memorial service of Michael Jackson until the only thing you haven't reported on is the exact second the friend of the cousin of the butler of the cook of the guy who once talked to MJ for three seconds at a concert 20 years ago started crying?

Let it go now,
Me

So someone posted to [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek about seeing the film with their dad and both of them tearing up and it really got me thinking and bummed me out a bit.

I am incredibly sad that I cannot see this movie with my mom. And that I can't see anything with her anymore. I can't geek out with her anymore.

I also realized that she had a hand in an insane amount of my fandoms.

She introduced me to pretty much every science fiction/fantasy series/movie I've ever loved. Let's just look at the ones I can remember: Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess... I know there's more. I just can't think of them!

I started rewatching season three of Heroes and while it's better than season two, I'm not enjoying it nearly as much and I've finally figured out the reason. I'm not watching it with her. We watched Heroes together and came up with our theories and tried to figure everything out and snark on Claire and Peter and perv a little over Nathan. Heck that was all the fun of Lost too. Trying to figure out everything together.

Thinking of that reminds me of a summer where we had a shitload of fun with a mystery. There was a soap opera on NBC awhile back called Passions and one summer they had a big overarching mystery plot. I remember both of us trying to figure out who did it. We even had a freaking chart hanging on the wall to mark out suspects. I don't remember who did it, but I remember us debating on suspects.

I've noticed that series like CSI has lost it's spark with me as well... I think part of that is that I've lost the fun it used to have fingering who did it and making fun of all the suspects.

I think she also played a large part in my love of slash (and even if she didn't I'm gonna blame her.) We always had the computer in the living room. I remember her watching Queer as Folk on TV as it was premiering and being really weirded out. I mean what the hell this is my mom watching what is kinda gay porn on TV in the same room with me. That lasted for about a season and then I just gave up and started watching it with her. (She also totally got me into Torchwood by being all "Oh yeah Jack is a little bisexual." I remember her actually cheering when Jack and Ianto kissed for the first time. Geez fangirl much, mom?)

This all also makes me wonder if the reason I latched onto House so hard is because it was something that we didn't share. We never watched House together. Never even thought about watching it. I didn't see my first episode till after I was living with my aunt. I also wonder if it's coincidence that the very first episode of House I ever saw was "Who's Your Daddy?" which had a PotW with her name, Leona.

TL;DR Version: I really miss watching things with my mom. Geeking out over TV and movies with her were really some of my best times.

My aunt is going back to school! Her first class is a history class and it starts on Tuesday night. She's kinda nervous, but I think she'll do okay. We also got lucky and my old history book is still used so we saved some money since that book is way overpriced even used.

I also finally got my old CDs out of storage... on the same day my computer died. So my iPod will have to wait a while before I rock the Ace of Base and Backstreet Boys on it.

Speaking of computers... we talked last night and we decided to spring for a really nice computer for entertainment purposes (me for my anime and TV show watching and my uncle for his gaming) and use my aunt's computer (the one I'm on now) for everything else. If everything goes right I should be able to get it before October too.

Dallas in a little over a week... I'm kind of dreading it since I'll be with a group of people I don't know and I currently don't have a ton of spending money (food is being paid for thankfully.) I really hope we get a good amount of time to veg out at the hotel since I really want to soak up that overpriced Sheraton goodness.

Entertainment-wise... for some insane reason I've decided to catch up on Heroes. I know, I know... it's crazy. But I'm bored and instead of watching something I need to watch *cough*Mad Men, 30 Rock*cough* I'd rather watch something that makes me sad. It's what I do.

Also I have got to get a DS so I can play Scribblenauts when it comes out. That game looks insanely amazing. You can summon Keyboard Cat! KEYBOARD CAT!

My fucking sound card on my fucking piece of shit computer is fucking dead.

Perfect. Fucking perfect.

I knew I should have bought a new fucking computer when I had the fucking money, but oh no... let's waste a ton of fucking money on NOTHING instead.

Fucking bullshit.

And now I can't get my computer to do anything. Brilliant.

When I get my fucking student money in fucking October... I'm spending it on a new computer. I don't fucking care about anything else. I'm getting a new fucking computer like I said I wanted last fucking year.

Royal Pains was surprisingly fun. I really enjoy Paulo Costanzo for some reason. Divya was the best character though. She's cute and smart. I don't know if it can keep my interested in the long run though.

I also caught the first episode of Nurse Jackie, Showtime's new series. It was running on The 101 (DirecTV's channel) and I needed to fill time. I don't know exactly how I feel about it. I did have a nice smirk on my face regarding the end of the episode though. It also contained surprise Peter Facinelli (who I love and totally forgive for being in Twilight. He's got three daughters. I get it.) He wasn't blonde and was kind of adorable even though he was playing a bit of an ass.

Also The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien needs a mention. I was so worried that he'd dial it back a little too much and lose some of his goofy charm, but he didn't. Even the theme song is still there. I'm so over the moon. It's wonderful. (Also go Joel McHale for being a first week guest. Awesome.)

Not only is Project Runway finally coming back on August 1st... but Tim Gunn is going to be in a comic book. And it will be awesome.
"But what would the angels be without someone to guide them? Enter Tim Gunn of “Project Runway.” In the debut issue’s second story, Mr. Gunn becomes an action figure — jumping into Iron Man’s suit of armor to save a fashion exhibition from evildoers."

Iron Gunn? Greatest thing ever? Y/Y?

I spent part of last night and today watching So NoTORIous. I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. I mostly came for Sylar as the GBFF, but I'll be damned if I didn't get a kick out of something in every episodes. VH1 needs to cancel some Flava/Rock of STDs and bring this shit back. I don't care if Tori Spelling is married with children now.

Also grr what the hell Amano? I don't want to go back to watching the fairly crap Reborn! anime for the Arcobaleno stuff. That should be in the manga, but we're too busy playing King of All Cosmos and junk. >=(

Ten days till The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien and I'm so crazy ready. I've missed that man so much.
queendork56: (Default)
I totally forgot about watching this last night, but thankfully Hulu saves my ass (yet again).

It's kind of crazy how much I loved this pilot. I had a giant smile on my face the entire time and honestly... I kinda teared up at the end. *loser* It's slightly bizarre though what with the dark humor mixed in with the "HAPPY YAY" stuff. Needless to say I will be watching in the fall.

In other news... two more days of school left this year! Whoo! I "helped" put up the calendar for next month. It looks so... thrown together by five year olds, but I don't care. I managed to put it up without injuring myself.

Speaking of... in addition to Monday's injuries I sliced my thumb with my own fingernail while trying to open a box of tea and then burned the exact same spot trying to drain the water off some pasta. And tonight I burned my arm on the cookie sheet trying to shake some fries off it. So not my week.

Oh... 30 Rock Progress: Season 1, Episode 4

WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME, ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.? WHY? I ONLY WANT TO LOVE YOU. D=

I WATCHED BOWFINGER FOR YOU!

I EVEN WATCHED FUR FOR YOU!

BUT YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR THIS TIME!

Oh who am I kidding? I'll still end up watching you... but I won't enjoy it!

Though I wasn't too gung-ho on Jude Law as Watson before (mostly because I'm not too gung-ho on Jude Law period), but for some reason I kinda liked the bitchy scene... *feels weird*

Trip recap!

Surprisingly only about 10 of us went when about 20 of us had said we were going. (Though honestly I'm glad some of them didn't go. >_>) We left out about 8:30 and got there at about 10. We did a quick tour of Paris Junior College and then went and did some shopping. I was broke so I just browsed around Hastings for like an hour and a half. I almost broke and bought a Sookie Stackhouse book, but alas I held out. At noon we went for lunch... it was nothing to write home about. Their cheesecake was good though. Then we hit a couple more stores and came home.

I'm kind of disappointed that the movie theater down there wouldn't work with us, but I had fun anyway. I managed to hit my head twice on the padded bar thing above the door of the bus (once getting on and once getting off) and I hit my shin on the bar under my seat three times. I've got a nice bruise forming.

Four more days and then I'm out for summer... really kinda looking forward to it.

Also My Life is Average is amazing.

OMG EDIT: HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] spookyboxers

Okay so on Friday we finally (finally) got Booster Gold on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Tom Everett Scott was back as Booster and Billy West was back as Skeets (they previously played them in an awesome episode of Justice League Unlimited).

I thought the episode was great. Booster was mostly played for laughs, but he did get his angst moment after Skeets was captured. "You broke my buddy. Now I'm gonna break you." was a great line.

While the episode lacked the emotional stuff "Fall of the Blue Beetle!" had, I really did enjoy it. I'm just extremely saddened that Booster and Ted have never appeared together in any of DC's animation projects. (Rights to the Blue Beetle were snarled during Justice League's run and DC is really pushing current!Beetle, Jaime in Brave and the Bold. I believe he's been in more episodes than anyone else other than Batman. Though Aquaman might be tied with him.)

I'm excited for next week's episode as well since the guest star is Robin/Dick! And we get both green panties and pixie boots and his Earth-2 costume (even though it's ugly as sin.) Ooh according to Wiki the guy who played Jet in Avatar is Robin.

And then according to Wiki, it just gets better. Ace the Bat-Hound, Catman (omg he's played by Biff lol), and Bat-Mite all in the same episode. That's some win right there.
